Australia to promote Malaysian films at annual film festival
KUALA LUMPUR 14 August 2008 – The Australian Government, through the Australia-Malaysia Institute, is providing funding for the second annual Australian-Malaysian Film Festival 2008 to be held in Melbourne this weekend.
The four-day festival, which opens on Friday 15 August, will be held at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square, Melbourne.
The Australia-Malaysia Institute is providing up to AUD10,000 (RM30,000) to promote Malaysian films and culture at the Festival. The Australia-Malaysia Institute also provided funding for the inaugural Festival in 2007. The funding aims to enhance public appreciation of the quality, sophistication and diversity of Malaysian arts and culture in Australia.
Over the four-day event, the Australian public will have the opportunity to watch five richly-diverse Malaysian feature films, screened in Australia for the first time. The films are: Sepi; Congkak; Waris Jari Hantu; Cuci; and Duyung. A number of short films will be shown at the Festival prior to each feature film.
Festival goers will also be able to view a free exhibition of Malaysian Batik design and fashion, featuring artists such as Emilia Tan, Eddie Yap, Fatimah Chik, Ghazali and Azizi. The exhibition will include Batik-making demonstrations and is sure to catch the attention of Australian art-lovers.
As part of the festival, screen professionals will be able to participate in a “Filmmaker’s Forum” featuring producers and cast from the five featured films and officials and members of FINAS (Malaysia’s national film body) and PFM (Malaysia’s Producer’s Association).
